facts about Canada
The population of Canada is 33.4 million. Canada is the second largest country after Russia. And they use the currency canadian dollars (CAD). Nearly 90% of canadians live within 200km of the border with the USA. There are endless forests, mountains and plains with animals like moose, beavers and grizzly bears. There are many eager hunters in Canada, and millions of firearms. One of the major domestic issues in Canada today is the separatist aspiration of French-speaking Quebec. In 2006 the parliament agreed that the Quebecois should be considered a "nation" within a united Canada. Canada is also worried about the pollution from the American factories near the border, and the exploitation of oil in Alaska.
harassment
There are several kinds of harassment in the world. Sexual harassment. Racial harassment. Personal harassment. Bullying. Stalking. Harassment of disabled people.
The moose and the sparrow
plot
The story is about a boy called Cecil. He is a 19-year old student from Canada. During his summer holiday he works in a lumber camp. Cecil is small and tiny. Therefore the foreman named Moose gives him a lot of trouble. It is Mr Anderson, who works together with Cecil that tells the story. One evening Mr Anderson went for a walk on the beach. Suddenly he saw Cecil. He was lying on the beach. He looked very lonely and he was crying. Cecil tells Mr Anderson that he is sad because Moose picks on him all the time. Cecil has two weeks left of his summer job. He needs the money to pay for his tuition. One day, mr. Moose was found dead. The men believe that he must have died when he fell down to a rocky ravine. The men were not broken hearted because of Moose’s death. That same night Cecil makes the watch strap for Mr Anderson out of wire. Just a few days after Moose’s death, Cecil went back to school. One day
Mr Anderson went for a walk where Moose had been found dead. He saw something
that the other men had missed. Two trees had big marks on them. It looked as if
someone had fastened a wire between the two trees. Perhaps Moose’s death was
not an accident after all? Perhaps it was a wire that had made him fall down
the ravine.
setting
The setting in the story takes place in a logging camp in British Columbia in Canada. The action often takes place in the bunkers where the men live during the summer holidays. The camp is surrounded by trees and ravines. The environment is tough, because they always pick on each other, and make each other feel bad. in the end, moose the bully trips and dies. The narrator implies that cecil may have tripped him with a wire.
point of view
The story is told from the point of view of a character in the text, that is called Mr. Anderson.
characters
Cecil is a young man, who is struggling to earn enough money for his second year at University. He seems to be quite small of growth and rather vulnerable, which might be a result of his childhood, in which he was forced to move from foster home to foster home. This has probably left a great deal of scares on him. Despite this he has a strong and determent side, which has helped him finish college and to continue his education at University.
Moose works as a saw boss at the camp. He seems hostile towards people he sees as more successful and smarter than himself, and he can not deal with the fact that someone is better than him. He is aggressive and violent, and seems to have problems controlling his anger. The stereotype of this kind of people suggests that he is a large and muscular man. He speaks with a condescending voice towards Cecil, and his dislike shines through in his every words. Moose has an unnatural need to take his jealousy out on Cecil, for example by giving him jobs much too hard for anyone.
Mr. Anderson plays the part of the narrator in this short story, and mostly watches the conflict from the sideline. He seems to be a sympathetic and helpful person, who takes Cecil under his wing and tries to protect him the best that he can. He is portrayed as a middle-aged man who smokes the pipe; to who’s appearance few details are given. He appears to have a certain authority in the camp, either because of his position or because of the time he has spent there.

theme
To determine the theme of the short story, we have to assume that Cecil killed Moose. The author probably wants to make people aware of the fact that even though a person might seem weak and vulnerable from the outside; she or he can be capable of doing the most extraordinary things. No one could have predicted that Cecil would go so far as to physically hurt Moose, because he seemed to be quite inexperienced and dependent on others. Another aspect of the short story is the reality that most people is not aware that their actions towards others might effect and harm themselves in the future, either if the offended party wants revenge, or if people around the offending party freezes them out or tries to punish them.
