South Africa
South Africa is a republic in the southern parts of the big continent Africa. In the north, South Africa shares boarder with Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. From 1948 – 1994, a minority regime led to a race separating system. The Apartheid was now in full action. Apartheid led to removing of black South Africans civil rights. In this horrible era, the black Africans felt suppressed and less worthy, which was not acceptable. The apartheid was abolished in 1991, and already in 1994, the South Africans had their first free democratic election. South Africa is big on the African continent, but still has great poverty gap.
South Africa is a country located below the equator. On the right side of South Africa, we find the Indian Ocean. If you look on the left side of South Africa we can find the South Atlantic Ocean. South Africa has a warm and pretty dry climate with certain rain-seasons which makes the trees, flowers and grass to once again grow.
The main capitol of South Africa is Cape Town, but South Africa got two other not so “important” capitols as well. Pretoria is the administrative capitol. The third and last capitol of South Africa is Bloemfontein, which is the legal capitol. All this three capitols is important, but it is Cape Town most people think about when they think about the capitol of South Africa.
South-Africa was a Dutch colony from 1652 all the way to1806. In 1806 the British came and declared it as a British colony. South Africa was a British colony until 31st of May, 1910. After this day South Africa was considered an independent, even though the country still was ruled by British settlers. The white people kept ruling. In 1948 they started the apartheid system, which took almost all the rights from the black Africans. The British was ruling over South-Africa once again with their “anti-black” politic. The apartheid-state was fully removed in 1990.
One person that fought against the apartheid system was Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela was a South African activist, who spent almost every hour fighting the apartheid system after it begun. For this he was jailed for 27 years on a remote island. While he sat there he was “working”. All that the prisoners did was that the chopped rocks and expanding the prison. They never left the island, they were only allowed to have one visitor each year and they couldn’t get visits from people that were under 16 years old. This meant that he didn’t see his daughters for 10 years! During his stay in prison, Mandela kept on boxing and do physical exercise. After a couple of years in prison he also started growing a vegetable garden on the roof of the prison. After 27 years he was finally released, and then he chose to run for president in 1994. Mandela won the election and became the first black president in South Africa ever. He was president in South Africa from 1994 until 1999. He also won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 for his work against the apartheid system. After this he retired and started traveling around and holding lectures where he spoke about his life, prison and racism. Nelson Mandela passed away the 5th of December 2013 at an age of 95.
To summar up, South Africa is a country that have had its ups and downs, but managed to stay strong and not giving in. Even though Nelson Mandela who is the most famous South African that was put behind bars, they still kept on fighting and I think that is very strong and inspirational.
